Topaz is most commonly water blue, but can be green yellow and pink. The name topaz used to be commonly given to any yellow quartz. It is a hard crystal rating 8 on Mohs scale. The word topaz is believed to be derived from the Sanskrit word 'tapas' meaning fire. It is formed by the action of hot fluosilicate and aluminium gasses during the cooling of magma. Topaz is the Birthstone for November.
